During a gout flare, even the lightest contact on the big toe joint can be excruciating. Orthofeet’s gout shoes are designed to give that joint the space and protection it needs: an extra-roomy toe box removes pressure on the big toe area, soft cushioned interiors eliminate pressure points on inflamed tissue, stretchable uppers adapt to sudden swelling, and extra-depth construction provides room when foot volume increases. Built for flares and the sensitive periods between them. Available in wide and extra-wide widths, backed by a 60-day wear test.

  • No, shoes cannot cause gout, but there are certain types of shoes that can increase the risk of developing gout. These include shoes that are too tight or have a narrow toe box, as they can put pressure on the toes and lead to joint damage, which in turn can increase the risk of developing gout. Additionally, high heels put pressure on the big toe joint, a common area of gout.
  • The best walking shoes for gout should decrease pressure on affected areas and flex around it as you walk. It's recommended that your walking shoes have:

    • Ergonomic soles with a mild rocker design that help propel the foot forward with minimal joint motion, and eliminate stress on the toes.
    • Arch support that controls overpronation and helps ease stress on the foot joints.
    • Stretchable uppers that eliminate pressure on the forefoot and toes and flexes and bends around the affected area while walking.
    • Wide toe box and extra depth to provide extra room for the toes.
  • Arch support helps distribute weight evenly across the foot, thus reducing the pressure on toe joints. People with gout may experience discomfort and pain in the joints of the toes and wearing shoes with adequate arch support can help reduce this discomfort and prevent gout flare-ups.
  • What Gout Demands from a Shoe

Gout is caused by uric acid crystal deposits in the joints, most commonly in the big toe, and the acute inflammation of a flare can make virtually any contact with that area unbearable. Standard shoe construction applies pressure to the big toe joint from multiple directions: the narrow toe box from above, the upper from the side, and compression that intensifies as the foot swells during a flare. Between flares, the joint often remains sensitive and prone to re-irritation. Orthofeet gout shoes are designed to meet every one of these requirements simultaneously: genuine space in the toe box to keep the upper away from the affected joint, soft and stretchable materials that adapt to the foot’s changing volume, and an adjustable fit system that works during both flares and the recovery period.

Features That Protect the Gout-Affected Joint

Every Orthofeet gout shoe is engineered around the protection needs of the gout-affected foot. The extra-roomy toe box is the foundation: it gives the big toe and joint area genuine space, preventing the upper from making contact with the inflamed area during ordinary walking. Soft, cushioned interiors pad the inside of the shoe to eliminate pressure points on sensitive or inflamed joints. Stretchable uppers conform and adapt to the foot’s shape rather than pressing against it, including during the sudden swelling that accompanies a flare. Extra-depth construction provides additional volume throughout the shoe to accommodate that swelling. Adjustable closures allow the fit to be modified throughout the day and across flare and non-flare periods. Arch support and Arch Booster technology reduce forefoot load that can compound joint stress, and the seamless non-binding interior eliminates secondary friction. Removable insoles accommodate custom orthotics, and wide and extra-wide widths are available.
