    Gout is caused by uric acid crystal deposits in the joints, most commonly in the big toe, and the acute inflammation of a flare can make virtually any contact with that area unbearable. Standard shoe construction applies pressure to the big toe joint from multiple directions: the narrow toe box from above, the upper from the side, and compression that intensifies as the foot swells during a flare. Between flares, the joint often remains sensitive and prone to re-irritation.
